Swapping USDT for cash and “discount USDT”: schemes and protection

Updated 3 min read

In short

  • A hand-to-hand swap is risky both ways: counterfeit notes for the buyer and a fake or dirty transfer for the seller.
  • Nobody sells USDT well below market for nothing: it is bait or dirty money.
  • A blockchain transfer can be checked before you hand over cash. Notes — before you send USDT.

How the schemes work

  • “Discount USDT.” The seller offers a rate 5–15% below market: “need cash urgently”, “leftovers from a business”. The result is a prepayment and a vanishing act, a fake token, or stolen USDT that an exchange later blocks.
  • A meet-up swap. You send USDT and get a bag of notes to “count later”. Inside are props, a padded “doll” bundle or counterfeits.
  • The reverse. You hand over cash and the “transfer” is shown on someone else’s phone. There is no transfer, see fake payment proof.
  • A messenger exchanger. An account with reviews, an “office” behind a link, a request to send USDT first “for verification”.

Signs of fraud

  • A rate noticeably better than the market.
  • Rush and pressure: “today only”, “I have another buyer”.
  • Neither the notes nor the transfer can be checked before the swap.
  • A meeting in a car, a stairwell or a place chosen by the counterparty.
  • A request to install an app, sign something in your wallet or send your seed phrase.

How to swap more safely

  • Check the counterparty’s address in advance in GuardPay /check: labels, links to schemes, age. An address that carried stolen money is a reason to walk away.
  • Meet in a busy place with cameras, ideally a bank or branch where notes can be checked.
  • Check cash before the transfer, and the transfer before handing over cash: in your own wallet, by hash on the blockchain.
  • Make sure it is real USDT, not a token with the same name, see fake USDT.
  • Do not take a rate that is “too good”. The gap to the market is the price of the risk.

If you were cheated

Keep the chat, addresses and hashes, note descriptions and the meeting place, and report to the police straight away. The USDT path can be traced, and the exchange addresses it reached can be listed in the report, see what to do in the first hours.

FAQ

Why is USDT sold below market?

An honest seller has no reason to lose money: USDT is easy to sell at market rate on an exchange. A discount is offered when the USDT is fake, stolen, or when there will be no sale at all.

Can USDT given for counterfeit notes be recovered?

The transfer cannot be reversed. But the funds’ path is visible on the blockchain: with a police report and exchange addresses, funds can sometimes be frozen.
