TRON and USDT basics
USDT TRC-20, ERC-20, BEP-20: what happens if you pick the wrong network
In short
- USDT on TRON, Ethereum and BNB Chain are three different tokens on three different networks. Transfers between them do not happen on their own.
- A TRON address starts with T; Ethereum and BNB Chain addresses start with 0x. That is the first check before a withdrawal.
- Sent to the wrong network? The money is usually not lost, but only the holder of the recipient address’s key, or the exchange, can return it.
How the networks differ
- TRC-20 (TRON). The address starts with
T, fees are paid in energy or TRX, transfers are fast and cheap. - ERC-20 (Ethereum). The address starts with
0x, fees are in ETH and usually higher. - BEP-20 (BNB Chain). The address also starts with
0xand looks like an Ethereum address; fees are in BNB.
The exchange, the wallet and the recipient must all use the same network. The name “USDT” in an interface says nothing about the network — look at the “Network” field.
Typical mistakes
- Withdrawing from an exchange on ERC-20 to a TRON address. Most exchanges will not allow it: the address format does not fit.
- Withdrawing on BEP-20 to an Ethereum address or the other way round. The addresses share a format and the exchange lets it through. If it is your own wallet with the same key, the funds are accessible: add the right network to the wallet.
- Depositing to an exchange on the wrong network. The money reached the exchange’s address but was not credited. The exchange can often return it manually, sometimes for a fee.
- The recipient expected TRC-20 but got a token with another contract — it may not be USDT at all, see fake USDT.
How to check where the money went
Paste the transfer hash or the address into GuardPay /check: a TRON address check shows incoming USDT, its contract and the recipient’s risks. How to read the transfer fields — how to read a TRON transaction.
What to do if you made a mistake
- Save the transfer hash, network, amount and address.
- If the address belongs to an exchange, write to its support with these details and ask for a return.
- If the address is your personal wallet with the same key, add the right network to the wallet: the funds will be there.
- Beware of “specialists” who promise to recover money from another network for a prepayment, see recovery scams.

Check an addressFAQ
Can I send USDT TRC-20 to an ERC-20 address?
A wallet or exchange usually will not accept a 0x address for the TRON network. If it did happen through a bridge service, only that service can return the funds.
Which network is best for USDT?
For everyday transfers many choose TRON for its low fees. What matters is that sender and recipient use the same network.
