Wallets and phishing
Fake wallets: how not to install an app that steals your USDT
In short
- A fake wallet looks like the real one but sends your seed phrase to scammers the moment you type it.
- Install a wallet only from the link on its official website, not from ads, search results or a chat.
- If you already entered your seed phrase into a suspicious app, the wallet is compromised: move the money to a new one.
Where fake wallets come from
- Search ads. The first link for “download TronLink” can lead to a copy of the site with an almost identical address.
- App stores. Copies with a similar name and icon sometimes pass review and live for a few days.
- Browser extensions. A fake is published under a well-known wallet’s name, sometimes with inflated reviews.
- Links in chats. “Support” or an “exchange manager” sends an APK file or a link to “the new version”.
How to spot a fake
- The site address matches the official one letter for letter, and you opened it yourself, not from a message link.
- In the app store the real wallet has millions of downloads, a long history and the developer named on the official site.
- A real wallet never asks you to enter your seed phrase to “sync”, “verify” or “unlock” funds.
- An app that shows someone else’s balance or a “bonus” without any action from you should be deleted at once.
If you already entered your seed phrase
- Create a new wallet in the real app, with a new seed phrase.
- Move your USDT and TRX there right away. If the old address has no TRX for fees, see energy and fees.
- Check the old address in /check: is there a multisig or someone else’s permission on it, see the seed phrase and multisig trap.
- If the money is already gone, follow the steps in what to do if you were scammed.
How to protect yourself in advance
- Bookmark the wallet’s official site and install updates only from the app store.
- For large amounts use a hardware wallet: the seed phrase never reaches your phone or computer.
- Do not keep your seed phrase in notes, photos or the cloud, see how to store a seed phrase.

Can money stolen by a fake wallet be recovered?
The transfer itself cannot be reversed. But the funds can be traced to exchanges, and an exchange can freeze an account at the police’s request. The sooner you start, the better the chances.
Is it dangerous just to install a fake app?
The main danger is entering your seed phrase or key. If you entered nothing, delete the app and scan the phone with antivirus; a new wallet is usually not needed in that case.
