P2P SCAM SCHEMES

6 ways scammers steal your crypto

Every scheme below has been used against real P2P traders. Here's how each works — and exactly how GuardPay's smart-contract escrow blocks it.

🔺

The Triangle

Scammer adds a third party to the chat. Buyer sends money to the scammer thinking it's the seller. Seller never gets paid. Classic P2P trick.
🛡 How GuardPay blocks it:
Smart contract locks funds until BOTH on-chain wallets agree. No third-party can intercept — payments only go to the verified deal participant.
🎭

Fake guarantor

Scammer impersonates an escrow service with a look-alike username. Victim sends funds to the fake, not the real escrow.
🛡 How GuardPay blocks it:
GuardPay runs only inside Telegram with verified bot. The escrow address is the smart contract (public on TronScan) — no human wallet to spoof.
🔄

Double-spend / RBF

Seller broadcasts a transfer, then replaces it with a higher-fee transaction that re-routes funds back. Buyer thinks they received crypto but the tx is canceled.
🛡 How GuardPay blocks it:
GuardPay waits for contract confirmation before releasing — single atomic event. No mempool race conditions, no RBF surprises.
⏳

Disappear after payment

Buyer pays. Seller goes silent, never delivers. On a regular P2P app you have no recourse — the funds are gone.
🛡 How GuardPay blocks it:
Funds are frozen in the contract until both parties confirm. If seller vanishes — buyer opens a dispute, 5 AI agents review the case, and funds return to the buyer automatically.
🌪️

Tainted wallet

Counterparty's wallet is linked to sanctioned addresses, mixers, or darknet. Your exchange freezes the funds you receive — even though YOU did nothing wrong.
🛡 How GuardPay blocks it:
Free address check screens any wallet against OFAC sanctions and on-chain history before you commit. If the counterparty's wallet is dirty — you know before sending.
🪤

Fake confirmation

Scammer sends a screenshot of a "completed payment" — but the transaction was never broadcast, or was sent to a different chain.
🛡 How GuardPay blocks it:
GuardPay never trusts screenshots. Only on-chain finality counts — the smart contract confirms receipt itself, not based on what either side says.
